Data is the lifeblood of your online presence. Whether it's server errors, cyberattacks, or accidental file deletions, the cost of data loss can be devastating. For dedicated server owners and webmasters, mastering cPanel backups and WHM migrations is not optional; it is essential.
At COLO BIRD, we believe that managing your dedicated server should be seamless. This guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step workflow to backup your site for safekeeping, restore it during emergencies, and transfer it to a new server using the WHM Transfer Tool.
Regular backups are your safety net. cPanel makes it easy to generate full or partial backups of your website files, databases, and email accounts.
Open your web browser.
Navigate to your cPanel login URL (usually https://www.yourdomain.com/cpanel).
Enter your username and password to access the dashboard.
A full account backup creates an archive of all your website files, databases, email accounts, and DNS settings.
Navigate to the Files section and click on Backup.
Click Download a Full Account Backup.
Under Backup Destination, select Home Directory.
Pro Tip: Enter your email address to receive a notification when the backup is ready, as large sites can take time to compress.
Click Generate Backup.
Once finished, you will find the file in the "Backups Available for Download" section. Download this file to your local computer or safe storage.
If you only need to save specific directories (like public_html), use the File Manager:
Open File Manager from the cPanel dashboard.
Navigate to the folder you wish to backup (e.g., public_html).
Select the desired folders, right-click, and choose Compress.
SeleSelect Zip Archive and click Compress Files.
Download the resulting .zip file to your computer.
Database backups are critical for Content Management Systems (CMS) like WordPress or Joomla.
Open phpMyAdmin from the Databases section in cPanel.
Click on the database you wish to backup in the left sidebar.
Click the Export tab in the top menu.
Choose the Quick export method and ensure the format is SQL.
Click Go. The .sql file will download to your computer.
Accidents happen. If your site breaks or files go missing, here is how to get back online quickly using your backups.
Open File Manager in cPanel.
Navigate to your website’s root folder (usually public_html).
Click Upload in the top toolbar and select your previously saved .zip backup file.
Once uploaded, right-click the file and select Extract.
Your files will replace the current content in that directory.
Open phpMyAdmin.
Select the target database (or create a new, empty one via "MySQL Databases" if the original was deleted).
Click the Import tab.
Click Choose File, select your .sql backup, and click Go.
A success message will confirm that your database tables have been restored.
Note on Full Account Restores: Restoring a "Full Account Backup" file often requires root access via WHM. If you are on a shared hosting plan, you may need to contact your support provider. If you are a COLO BIRD dedicated server client, you can perform this via WHM (see below).
Migrating to a new dedicated server? The WHM Transfer Tool is the industry standard for moving cPanel accounts seamlessly with zero data loss.
Navigate to https://yourserverIP:2087.
Enter your root username and password.
In the top-left search bar, type "Transfer".
Click on Transfer Tool under the Transfers section.
You need to tell your new server where to fetch the data from.
Remote Server Address: Enter the IP address or hostname of the old server.
Remote SSH Port: Usually 22.
Authentication: Enter the Root password for the source (old) server.
Click Fetch Account List.
Check the boxes next to the cPanel accounts you want to migrate.
Configuration: Ensure "Copy Reseller Privileges," "Express Transfer," and "Copy Databases" are checked.
Review your settings to ensure you are capturing all necessary data.
Click Copy or Transfer.
WHM will display a real-time progress log. Do not close the window until the transfer is complete.
Once finished, verify that all accounts appear on the new server.
Update your domain’s nameservers or A Records to point to the new server’s IP address.
Allow 24 - 48 hours for global DNS propagation.
